MASTER ENGLISH SENTENCES WITH S+V (4) : verbs followed by adjectives

If you have not fully understood S+V pattern, please review it in part A of this blog.

A.

In my S+V sentence pattern, there are four elements included. Let's look at how a sentence can be developed step by step with these four elements (N, V, Adj, Adv).

1. Subject (S) part in S+V:

Nouns (N) and verbs (V) are the two major elements used in the subject part.

-Those people envy you. [N: those people, S: those people]

-Helping others is nice. [V+ing: helping, N: others, S: helping others]

2. Action/State (V) part in S+V:

Verbs (V) are a must in the action/state part so I use 'V' for this part. We often see nouns (N) also added to this part.

-They know. [V: know, Action: know]

-They know my secret. [V: know, N: my secret, Action: know my secret]

3. Add more information with adjectives (Adj) in both S and V parts:

Adjectives (Adj) are used to describe nouns (N) and an adjective is possible to be placed before or after a noun, which will be discussed in another post.

-The good news will surprise the young kids.

[S: the good news] + [V: will surprise the young kids]

[Adj: good] + [N: news] = good news

[Adj: young] + [N: kids] = young kids

4. Add more information with adverbs (Adv):

Adverbs (Adv) are used to emphasize four things in a sentence: (1) the whole sentence (S+V), (2) an adjective (Adj), (3) an action (V), (4) an adverb (Adv). There are many possible positions for an adverb in a sentence and they are the topics included in other posts.

-In my opinion, the very tall guy will beat you pretty soon.

  (1) [Adv: in my opinion] + [Sentence: the very tall guy will beat you pretty soon]

= In my opinion, the very tall guy will beat you pretty soon.

  (2) [Adv: very] + [Adj: tall] = very tall

  (3) [Adv: soon] + [Action: will beat you] = will beat you soon

  (4) [Adv: pretty] + [Adv: soon] = pretty soon

B.

Once you understand my S+V pattern and the four elements, we will discuss the focus in this lesson, verb. Verbs are the key to English and what elements can come with verbs also requires your attention. Some verbs do not need nouns behind them [in lesson S+V (1)], eg. They will laugh, but some verbs must be followed by nouns [in lesson S+V (3)], eg. He will find it. Many learners get confused with whether a verb needs a noun because English contradicts (is different from) their native languages on this concept. Even some of those English verbs can come with or without nouns in different situations.

In addition, some verbs can be followed by adjectives and there are two types of them, called 'linking verbs' and 'complex transitive verbs' in case you are interested to know. Those verbs are rare so they are special and important. In the following examples, you will see two patterns with the verbs followed by adjectives.

1. Subject (N) + Action (V + Adj)

- The speech is powerful. [V: is, Adj: powerful]

- Those farmers feel happy.

- These rooms look neat.

- The comments sound insulting.

- These dishes taste amazing.

- Those bags smell awful.

- They seem unpopular.

- They turn emotional.

- She will go crazy.

- They grow impatient.

- These methods prove useless.

- I get upset.

- They become wealthy.

- Those TV shows appear unsuccessful.

- He will stay calm.

- They remain assertive.

2. Subject (N) + Action (V + N + Adj)

- The garlic will make the soup delicious. [V: make, N: the soup, Adj: delicious]

- The games will get these boys excited.

- They call him silly.

- They keep their rooms tidy.

- We will paint the wall blue.

- She will dye her hair green.

- They find the duties onerous.

- We consider the idea ridiculous.

- The soldiers judge the situation dangerous.

- They deem the dance phenomenal.

- They declare the museum open.

[Reminder] Watch the video before starting reading the text and you can see all the pictures together if you click on one of them! You can also use the 'Translate' tool on the blog to help you understand the text. What's better, all the key vocabulary in my examples ranges from elementary to advanced levels (CEFR: A1~C2 / IELTS: 1~9) so you will learn a lot of English words if you keep studying each lesson. You will also benefit more if you use a dictionary to help you. Finally, don't forget to use English in daily life so all the grammar/vocabulary can be stored in your mind easier. While using this language, you are also learning from others and observing when is the appropriate context for different usages.
