MASTER ENGLISH SENTENCES WITH S+V (5) : verbs followed by 2 nouns
Imagine we are going to build a house, piece by piece under a structure. Like building a house, we can build a SENTENCE with four elements, NOUN, VERB, ADJECTIVE and ADVERB, within the S (subject) + V (action/state) pattern. The following are the steps you can take to easily build a sentence.
Step 1: use 'N & V'
The lady found her home.
-[S: the lady (N)] + [V: found her home (V+N)]
Step 2: add 'Adj'
The old lady found her sweet home.
-[S: the old lady (Adj: old)] + [V: found her sweet home (Adj: sweet)]
Step 3: add 'Adv'
Luckily, the old lady found her sweet home last night.
-[Adv: luckily] + [S: the old lady] + [V: found her sweet home last night (Adv: last night)]
In this lesson, we will look at this pattern 'S + V (Verb + Noun 1 + Noun 2)' and focus on those verbs that can be followed by two nouns. You can see those verbs below:
allow, ask, award, buy, bring
build, cook, cost, deny, feed
fine, forgive, find, give, get
hand, leave, lend, offer, owe
pass, post, prescribe, promise, read
refuse, show, teach, tell, wish
write, appoint, call, consider, designate
elect, judge, deem, declare, make
Now look at some examples with the key verb underlined to fully understand this pattern. Each example is changed in a different way and those changes are highlighted in bold. You will see how easy it is to create sentences and you can do it in the same way according to the meanings you would like to express.
Example 1:
-He will show them the exit.
[S] [V] [N] [N]
-He will show them the entrance. (One noun is changed.)
-He will show them the evidence. (One noun is changed.)
-He will show them his photos. (One noun is changed.)
Example 2:
-Babysitting will give the man a headache.
[S] [V] [N] [N]
-The wind will give the lady a sniffle. (Three nouns are changed.)
-The cold wind will give the young lady a sniffle. (Two adjectives are added.)
Example 3:
-The coach will allow the players a day off.
[S] [V] [N] [N]
-The neighbor will allow us an access. (Three nouns are changed.)
-The neighbor will allow us an easy access. (One adjective is added.)
Example 4:
- I will buy you ice cream.
[S] [V] [N] [N]
-I will definitely buy you homemade ice cream. (One adverb and one adjective are added.)
Next time when you see the whole sentence like this, 'I will definitely buy you homemade ice cream,' you will not be scared away if you understand the concept of my S+V pattern with four elements. You will also begin to feel building your own sentences is a breeze!
